A refusal to give up hope in the face of despair. A portable altar meant to provide spiritual and physical nourishment, very much inspired by Lauren Olamina’s grab-and-run pack in Parable of the Sower.
In the wake of my maternal grandmother’s death, I asked the women in my family to give me a piece of black fabric with the goal of creating a work that would bring us together and represent us as a whole. These miscellaneous textiles became the outer skin of the soft sculptures that were then filled with dried legumes, rice, and Red Rose tea—Nana’s favourite.
Poetically, every one of us existed within our grandmothers’ wombs. Part of me was carried by Nana, and now that she has passed I carry parts of her with me.
